Event details

This webinar will be presented by Tony Hanley of FirePro UK and will focus on the importance of protecting heritage premises from fire in order to protect irreplaceable historical premises and artefacts.

Tony will explore the lessons learned from the high-profile fire at Notre Dame. He will cover key aspects on a paper on the fire written by Jérôme Barthélemy* of the ESSEC Business School, France.

In early 2019, the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral was nearly destroyed by a fire. Many people still believe that it was entirely due to errors made by frontline workers. This study suggests that it resulted from the combination of various types of errors. It also argues that it was a predictable surprise, which is a disastrous event that could have been anticipated.

Tony will be opening the pandoras box of the reported events, and demonstrating how losses caused by fire in heritage premises in particular, may be dramatically reduced by adopting fire strategies that utilise todays appropriately performance certificated fire protection technologies, which when correctly engineered, will raise early warning of fire, as well as buying precious time by delivering localised fire suppression in high fire risk areas such as voids, electrical rooms, lofts, cavities, all without water, pressurised gas, pipes or excessive cabling.

*Jérôme Barthélemy is Executive Vice-President, Dean for Post Experience Programs, Corporate Programs and Relations and Professor of Strategy and Management at ESSEC Business School. He has been a visiting professor and visiting research scholar at New York University, Stanford University and Cambridge University. He is also the author of Myths of strategy (Kogan Page, 2022).

All attendees will receive a CPD certificate.
